Saluki breed guide
The American Kennel Club calls the Saluki among the world's oldest breeds, the slim but rugged hunting hound of kings for thousands of years, a swift, agile sprinter that loves a good chase and makes a gentle, dignified, independent but loyal pet.
Experts say Salukis might go back as far as 7000 B.C. and the breed today is remarkably like its ancient ancestors in shape and personality.
Temperament
Salukis are highly adaptable, able to live and work in any climate. They are magnificent animals but owning one comes with many special challenges.
They benefit from three types of training: crate training for safe confinement at home and on trips, basic obedience for manners and a third kind to channel the breed's chase instinct.
Lifespan
Salukis live 10 to 17 years. The breed is free from serious genetic diseases, though some develop heart conditions such as valve disease or arrhythmia and certain cancers such as hemangiosarcoma, osteosarcoma, lymphoma or mammary cancer, which early spaying prevents.
Vigorous running and playing after eating can cause bloat or gastric torsion, a life-threatening emergency.
Care
Salukis have two coat types, fringed and smooth and both are easily groomed with weekly brushing, though long ear or tail fringe takes a bit more attention. Many owners use a snood to keep ear fringe out of the food bowl.
Salukis need regular exercise and daily walks always on a leash help both hound and owner stay fit. They love to run and should have a well-fenced yard to keep them away from traffic and like other dogs may turn destructive or escape when bored.
History
The Saluki is among the oldest dog breeds. Like other sighthounds, it was a special favorite of kings: Egyptian pharaohs, Alexander the Great and on through history.
We can still admire the same sleek lines and natural dignity that thrilled the royal families of the Middle East, Egypt and Asia since before the Pyramids were built.
